Message to Families About Yesterday’s School Day
Moses Lake families,
We want to clarify some confusion following a student-organized walkout that occurred yesterday, Tuesday, January 27, involving students from Moses Lake High School and Vanguard Academy. The walkout was initiated by students and not by the schools or the District. Moses Lake School District did not sponsor, plan, promote, endorse, or supervise this activity, and no instructional time was set aside for it.
We understand that students may have strong feelings about issues affecting their lives and communities. We recognize and value student voice. During the school day, however, the District’s responsibility is to ensure student safety, accountability, and that learning continues as scheduled.
Schools remained open and operating as usual, and students were expected to remain in class. District staff remained on campus to support student safety and learning throughout the school day.
Students who left campus without prior parent permission were marked with unexcused absences for the instructional periods missed, and families were notified. Students are responsible for making up any missed academic work.
We appreciate our families and community reaching out with questions and thank you for your continued partnership as we keep our focus on student learning and safety.
